The city of Fontana was established in 1913 and has since grown to a population of 190356 residents. The city is located in San Bernardino County, with the Interstate 15 passing diagonally through the northwest part of the city and the Interstate 20 and State Route 210 intersecting the city from east to west. The cities economy was primarily rural until World War II, When Henry J. Kaiser built a large steel mill in the city. This has since been replaced with the Auto Club Speedway.
Fontana is currently home to the largest library in San Bernardino County. It has several attractions and amenities that appeal to residents and tourists alike. There is a renovated historic theatre where live shows are played, along with a beautiful city park and the Auto Club Speedway. Fontana is the home to the Fontana Days Half Marathon and 5K run, which is the fastest half marathon course in the world.
The cities economy is mostly industrial, along with a focus on the trucking industry. There are several truck dealerships, along with other large, industrial equipment sale centres littered throughout the city. There are plenty of centres, such as Toyota, Target, Sears, and Mercedes-Benz, which distribute their products. Salvage yards are quite popular here, along with small car dealerships. Retail is also very popular in the city. There are two main shopping centres in the city, with Palm Court in the south end of the city and Summit Heights Gateway/Falcon Ridge Town Centre in the north. “Miracle Mile” is part of a commercial strip zone which lies along the 210 freeway in between Citrus and Sierra Avenues. Fontana Auto Center has two major dealerships in this zone.
Although the Auto Club Speedway is located outside of city limits, it still provides a huge boost to the economy. For three or four days a year, tens of thousands of people flock her to watch the races. For these few days, the businesses in Fontana thrive.
